Richard graduated summa cum laude from Brigham Young University in 1976 where he was recognized as a Hinckley Scholar and the Outstanding Senior in Public Relations. In 1979, he received his law degree from the J. Reuben Clark Law School at BYU. During his law school years, he served as Note and Comment Editor of the BYU Law Review and attended Georgetown University's Law School for a semester. He also worked for almost a year at the United States Supreme Court as the Coordinator of a Bicentennial Film Project under the supervision of Justice Byron White and Chief Justice Warren Burger.
Following law school, Richard joined Arizona's largest law firm, Snell & Wilmer. He spent 20 years with Snell & Wilmer and worked his way from associate, to partner, and then equity partner. After leaving Snell & Wilmer, Richard moved to Utah and became a founding partner of Fillmore Spencer. Richard has served as the founding president of The Arizona Forum, as a member of the national Board of Directors and Executive Committee of the BYU Alumni Association, and as a member and President of the Provo School District Board of Education.
Richard focuses his practice in the areas of business, real estate, and transactional matters, with extensive and valuable experience in securities, mergers and acquisitions, health care, and international matters. For the past ten years, Richard has had an "AV" rating with Martindale-Hubbell (the highest rating awarded to attorneys by their peers for legal ability and ethical standards). Richard remains a member of the Arizona Bar Association and is active in the Utah Bar Association.
